In an unstable economy, how is it that the city of Cambridge is able to thrive? Cambridge is clearly doing something right, so should we all be paying more attention to this booming city?
The Cambridge economy appears to defy all odds, in fact, in late 2014 it was revealed that Cambridge is the country’s fastest growing city in the UK. In addition to this, earlier this year it was also ranked among Europe’s top 10 ‘cities of the future’, making Cambridge an economical bench mark for the rest of the UK.
Cambridge isn’t all just bicycles and punting, just outside the town itself is the Cambridge Science Park, boasting shiny new laboratories and high-tech research centres. Cambridge does a wonderful job of merging academia and entrepreneurship, this means the city gives birth to some of the most innovative companies in the country.
With accolades like this, should we be using Cambridge as a template for the UK economy? It is in many ways a model city (not the kind where everything is miniature), displaying rapid growth and making a valuable contribution to the country as a whole. As a result of the growth at places like the Cambridge Science Park, Cambridge has added billions to the amount of tax money the city pays to the Treasury.
Cambridge is certainly not a city to be overlooked, it may well hold the secret to survival in difficult economic climates.
