“Homepreneurs” is a relatively new term used to describe those running a business from home and is being used more and more as the number of home businesses in the UK is increasing.
A report, by Enterprise Nation has revealed that Britain currently has 2.9m homepreneurs, bringing many benefits, such as delivering £40bn to the local communities in which the businesses operate, and contributing £300bn to the national economy. In addition to this, the rise of the homepreneur is set to create 5 million freelance jobs over the next 3 years.
The notion of hompreneurs being low-paid hobbyists is outdated; it has in fact been revealed that home business owners are highly-educated and highly-skilled individuals whom are playing a vital role in the economic recovery.
There does, however, appear to be an unbalanced ratio of male to female homepreneurs, with 64% of homepreneurs are female. We can however, dispel the myth that women are motivated to start-up home businesses by childcare duties, because only 28% of the women have a child under the age of 10.
The statistics regarding home businesses are extremely positive:
- A third of home businesses operate in international markets.
- 86% say they will never return to a job.
- 65% plan to keep the business based at home.
- Only 7% closed a previous business due to bankruptcy.
- 85% are expecting to see growth in the next 12 months
- 69% of home businesses are run by people running a company for the first time.
The report by Enterprise Nation, serves to change people’s perception of home businesses, and reveals just how much they have positively affected the economy, thanks to homepreneurs.
