VAT Liability On Hotel Wedding Packages

July 2014

What you need to know about VAT on Hotel Wedding Packages

In addition to hotels, it is now quite common for many different types of holiday accommodation – as well as other far less traditional venues like puppet theatres, windmills and cinemas even – to provide a complete package of services for weddings. These venues may offer a complete range of services including planning, managing the wedding list, photographers, flowers, help with choosing the readings, and making sure the guests know where to sit. Other venues may simply offer the building for hire.

Recent changes in the law have also meant that such establishments are able to obtain licences allowing civil marriages to take place on their premises too, meaning the variety of places and venues has become much wider than it ever used to be.

Customs and excise have ruled that such packages, which commonly include catering, bar services and music constitute one supply taxable at the standard rate. Previously hotels had sought to exempt from VAT the hire of the room as an exempt item. But room hire is now considered to be an integral part of a single supply.
