Record Number of Online Tax Returns Filed Over Christmas Period

A record number of people have filed their online tax returns over the festive period this year, with HMRC stating that they received a 5% increase in submissions compared to last year.

The figures show that on Christmas Eve, 17,644 returns were filed online – an increase of 4% compared to 2013. Whilst people were looking forward to tucking into their Christmas dinner (between 12- 1PM), 148 returns were submitted and a total of 1,773 were filed throughout the entire day. Another 4,811 put aside their Boxing Day festivities to file their returns and this was the biggest increase at 7%.

HMRC are warning people who are yet to submit their tax returns, to so it as soon as possible to avoid the late penalties that may be incurred if you fail to complete and submit before the deadline of January 31st 2015.
